MPS Alternative and Extended Learning Programs...Where Students Have a Choice with LEARNER OPTIONS.

The Alternative and Extended Learning Office has many components: Contract Alternative Schools, OnLine Learning, Area Learning Centers, Hospital Agencies, Summer School and Home School. Please see the links on the left or below to go to the different pages that represent part of our department.

The Choice is Similar But Different . . .

Minneapolis Public Schools supports learner options through a variety of small school programs.  All options listed are public schools authorized by the state of Minnesota. The variance among them lies in their legal contracts. The commonality is their commitment to serving students and families.

1. Contract Alternative Schools

Contract Alternative Schools are run by community agencies that hire staff and provide the educational program.  Their mission is to serve at risk youth as defined by Minnesota Statute.  Students attending these schools continue to be Minneapolis Public Schools students during their enrollment.  Last year, approximately 1200 students received an education in these schools.

2. Area Learning Centers

ALCs are full day schools or extended day programs that serve "at risk" youth as defined by Minnesota Statute. These programs must have continuous learning plans for all enrolled students. Some models include school within a school, pullout and stand-alone sites.  Click to visit our ALC Web site.

3. Hospital Agencies- Minneapolis Public School's Hospital/Agency Program provides  individualized educational instruction for children and adolescents placed within the district's six hospitals.  We also work with the agencies called Minneapolis Teen Challenge and Children's Residential Treatment Center.

4. Summer School

5. OnLine Learning-MPS Online uses current and emerging technologies to support the development of advanced knowledge and skills and the ability to apply them to complex circumstances. MPS Online allows for the personalization of learning that can assist each student in meeting his or her individual goals and potential.
